So you have tried out Virtual Reality and are blown away. You’ve gone to Mars, explored a haunted house, experienced countless demos and more. How about taking the next step and entering what I believe to be the end goal of VR. I’m talking about the Metaverse, the Matrix, the rabbit hole that has no end.
- A VR Device such as Oculus Rift, Vive, OSVR etc. (Google Cardboard and Gear VR owners read this first)
- Quality Microphone or Headset
- Gamepad (Wired or Wireless Xbox controller is best)
- Motion Controller (not necessary but will dramatically increase the immersion)
- Doritos and Mountain Dew
The Roads to the Metaverse
There are currently many ways to enter this Virtual Internet, or Metaverse. Each have their own unique advantages and disadvantages. We will be adding to this list as more avenues are found to the Metaverse. Also, I would like to note that we will not consider apps that have no movement or are not polished enough.
Currently VR Pill’s personal favorite, VRChat should be renamed something else as it does not just involve chatting. VRChat let’s you be anyone and create anything you want. I am serious when I say this. People have already created dozens of unique worlds and avatars. Hell, last night I was chatting with Mario and Batman in Aladdin’s Cave of Wonders, and it actually felt like they were there with me.
VRChat makes it easy to create and explore virtual reality with other people. Any 3D content brought onto our platform is instantly transformed into a social experience.

JanusVR is as close as you are going to get to a virtual internet. You can create any avatar you want, and explore boundless amounts of spaces with friends. The best part of JanusVR is it’s incredible functionality built in. You can interact with any web panel, and drag objects right out of these web panels into the virtual space. There’s nothing like dragging a 3-D model of Michael Jackson straight into the virtual world. You can visit different worlds by clicking on portals and immediately entering them, with no loading screens.
Convrge is the hot spot for important developer talks in the Metaverse. When you enter Convrge, you will be in a low poly yet beautiful forest with about half a dozen spots to hangout at. Some of these spots have just a campfire, some of them have theater sized screens, and there is even a full dance floor. Convrge is simple, yet elegantly done, and something I can see translating perfectly to a mobile virtual reality environment. The quality of the guests they have coming in for talks is quite high.
AltspaceVR is the only one out of all the portals to the Metaverse that is currently testing a mobile Gear VR version. Soon you will be able to access AltspaceVR on the go or at home on your Oculus Rift/Vive etc. There are some fascinating events that take place in AltspaceVR. One that comes to mind is taking a tour through an actual scan of a volcano to scale. Also, the web panels in AltspaceVR are the best quality I’ve seen in the Metaverse. If you want to watch a video with friends, AltspaceVR is the best place to do it for the screen quality.
VRChive, the image hosting source for VR, is the place to host 360° pictures you take from the Metaverse. Right now they are only built into VRChat for 3-D 360° panoramas and JanusVR for 2-D 360° panoramas. The great thing about these panoramas is that you can pull them up on a Google Cardboard on the go, and show your friends without VR headsets what they are missing.
VR Pill is so passionate about the Metaverse that we have made a blog specifically following our adventures in these worlds. Each article is filled with 360° panoramas from our journeys. Right now we are covering VRChat, but will be soon venturing into JanusVR as well, and more as they add the ability to take 360° panos.
Perhaps reading is not your thing (other than this article of course). In that case, we are constantly streaming live from the Metaverse. If you don’t catch the streams when they are live, you can view the craziness from our YouTube Playlist.
